DİYARBAKIR BAR ASSOCIATION ASSOCIATION REPORT ON HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN THE HIGH-SECURITY CLOSED PENITENTIARY INSTITUTION NO. 1 OF ELAZIG

Members of the military accused of the controversial 15 July Coup Attempt made important statements during their trial. In their statements, they gave important information against the former Chief of General Staff and other commanders. Following these statements, on August 7, 2023, an unbelievable incident took place in a high-security prison in Elazığ. A mafia member managed to enter the locked room of a soldier convicted of coup crime by overpowering the guards on his way back from the hospital late at night. He held the soldier captive for hours and wounded him with a skewer. Some believe that this was an attempt to intimidate those who knew about the behind-the-scenes of the coup attempt and to keep them silent. There has been no statement from the authorities on this grave incident. Immediate legal action must be taken against all those responsible and made public.

Lawyers from the Diyarbakır Bar Association interviewed the victims of the incident and the authorities they could reach and prepared a report. Due to the importance of the issue, we, as the Association, wanted to translate this report into German and English to contribute to its dissemination to a wider audience.
